Mosquito trap

Madeira, as many southern European countries, has Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector for Dengue fever. Mosquito traps are a contribution to the reduction of mosquito population and prevention to getting bitten.

Placement of Mosquito traps

Biogents traps can be places anywhere, be it on a verandah, outside or even inside.

Mosquitoes prefer protected locations, away from direct sunlight and wind. Mosquito fly upwind towards their target, as the wind carries the scent to them - try to place the traps between you and the mosquitoes!

The following locations result in ideal placement:

Breeding Waters
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water and then search for blood. Any vessel without small fish, standing water in plant dishes, gutters and even puddles are potential breeding sites.

Empty these vessels and try and fill with fine gravel.

By placing a trap here, mosquitoes are captured at source

Rest Areas
Mosquitoes rest in fresh foliage or shrubs, protected from direct sunlight and wind as well as fountains, drains, cellars and open pipes which will prevent dehydration before starting on their search for blood.

Therefore, place the traps on the ground near breeding waters or rest areas and about one meter away from walls, shrubs or other larger-sized objects.

Important: The entire surface of the trap should be clearly visible. This is best for the release of the attractive air plume and for the mosquitoes to see the contrast.

Biogent mosquito traps
  • are not able to reduce populations of millions of mosquitoes – a situation that can occur after floods (no trap can do this).
  • are also not able to eliminate your mosquito problem over night – in the best case it should be left running for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for as long as possible.  Furthermore, the BG-Sentinel should be kept running even if the mosquito population has decreased to ensure that newly hatched mosquitoes (e.g. after heavy rainfall) or migrating mosquitoes can still be captured.
  • cannot capture mosquitoes if insecticides or pesticides are sprayed in or around the trap.
