Mosquito Monitoring Programme
Monitor the Aedes aegypti mosquito population (vector of Dengue virus which causes Dengue Fever) and take timely measures to reduce the mosquito population as this is the most effective method to reduce the spread of Dengue.
Mosquito Monitoring Programme - Madeira
Following a Dengue Fever outbreak in Madeira between October 2012 and January 2013, ZINO Consultadoria, in partnership with ITB have developed the Mosquito Monitoring Programme.
Using Biogents Mosquitaire Aedes aegypti mosquito traps the to measure adult mosquito population and Ovitraps to measure mosquito eggs and larvae, the Mosquito Monitoring Programme will allow participants to monitor Aedes aegypti mosquito population and take adequate steps to reduce the mosquito population, which is still the best solution to reduce mosquito bite and subsequent Dengue fever transmission.
The Biogents Mosquitaire traps are scientifically proven and accepted as the most Aedes aegypti mosquito traps, after humans, as per study published by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) in August 2012.

On reaching predetermined index, participants in the monitoring programme will be advised to take measures - either preventative (mosquito nets, cleaning breading grounds, etc) or reactive (more mosquito traps, chemical treatments, etc), thus avoiding another mosquito population increase and consequent Dengue outbreak.
The Mosquito Monitoring Programme will also allow participants to concentrate resources in locations where there are issues (breeding grounds, outdoor public areas where there is a likelihood of being bitten if mosquito present), but also transmitting a greater sense of comfort to both locals and visitors to the island.
Participants in the Mosquito Monitoring Programme will be issued with a participation certificate, as well as contribute to improve the Regional monitoring network.
