Madeira Tourism

Also known as "The Pearl of the Atlantic", "The Floating Garden" is a small Portugues island rediscovered in 1419 after discovering Porto Santo in 1418.
The islands were known to the Phoenicians, and in time of King Juba II of Mauretania they were called the Insulae Purpuriae, after the purple dye
produced there.

Today Madeira has some 267,938 residents (2011 census) and an economy where tourism represents 20 - 25% regional GDP

Madeira is sought as a destination for, acording to a study done at the airport during December 2009 and January 2010 "Tourism Spend" for both business (13% of visitors) and holidays (85% of visitors). Of the visitor market, the main three reasons for visitng are:
  • Contact with Nature
  • Sun & Sea
  • Culture.

There is a growing cruise market on the island too, which over the years has shows substancial growth both in number of ships calling in at Funchal as well as passengers visiting the island for the day.

Here have collected some information from available statistics and summarised these in monthly reports and news. - Madeira Tourism Research.
