Comments and Analysis by ZINO

As reported in the ECDC report 13 December 2012, although there is a reduction in number of new cases, new cases are still being reported:
The updated figures indicate that the outbreak has peaked and despite an important decrease of the number of notified cases reported, the outbreak is still on-going. Therefore, more cases among the island’s population as well as among returning tourists should be expected.
The main breeding period of the dengue mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, will continue until the beginning of next year and coincides with a peak in the number of visitors to the island over the Christmas holidays.
There was fanfare that the regional authorities including the "Tourism Board" and "Regional Health Authorities" as well as the "Chamber of Commerce" and "enterprises" were setting up a commission to monitor this situation. We  very much hope that monitoring will occur so that when there is the next Aedes aegypti mosquito surge, adequate measures can be taken in a timely fashion to prevent large mosquito populations and consequent dengue transmission.

If you would be interested in participating in a monitoring programme, please contact us.

Many holiday destinations are Dengue fever zones, as identified by the World Health Organization. recent outbreaks in Europe raise the questions:
- do holiday makers understand that there are various strains of Dengue fever, from a mild strain which causes flu like symptoms to hemorrhagic fever
- most dengue cases have a possitive evolution with no medical problems
- that preventative measures such as the use of mosquito repellent, long sleeve shirts and trousers, mosquito nets are usually enough to prevent getting bitten
- accommodation and leisure facilities which undertake mosquito control measures also contribute to the preventative measures, as reduce the mosquito population

We would very much like to know your opinion, as a holiday maker.

Fight against Aedes aegypti mosquito

ACIF (Funchal Chamber of Commerce),  Madeira Tourism Board and IA Saude (local Health Authority) and hoteliers participated in a joint training programme on 30 November 2012, regarding preventative methods which all should be implementing to reduce the Aedes aegypti mosquito population, vector of the Dengue virus which gives causes Dengue Fever.

In the studies and monitoring program, BG Sentinel mosquito traps, represented by ZINO, are used.

All traps have the same efficiency for Aedes aegypti mosquito, although the introduction of CO2 has further increases this efficiency - more information in how does it work and research.

We currently have in stock Biogents Mosquitaire and Mosquitito traps.
